APS6 Work Health and Safety (WHS) Officer
Location: Canberra, ACT Classification: APS Level 6 Security Clearance: NV1 (Negative Vetting 1) is essential for this role.
About the Role
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced APS6 WHS Officer to join our team. This is a critical role that ensures the health and safety of our workforce, both domestically and internationally.
As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for implementing and managing robust WHS policies and systems. You will work within a complex and secure environment, requiring a current and active NV1 security clearance. The role involves occasional international travel to various posts to conduct site inspections, risk assessments, and provide essential WHS training and advice.
Key Responsibilities
Implement WHS policies, procedures, and training programs that comply with Australian legislation and international best practices.
Conduct regular WHS audits, risk assessments, and inspections, both in Australia and at international locations.
Investigate WHS incidents, accidents, and near misses, and prepare detailed reports with recommendations for preventative action.
Provide expert WHS advice and guidance to managers and staff, fostering a strong culture of safety.
Manage WHS records, including data on incidents, training, and risk assessments.
Liaise with internal and external stakeholders, including government bodies, contractors, and international partners.
Skills & Experience
Essential
Current NV1 Security Clearance: Must hold and maintain a valid Negative Vetting 1 security clearance. Applicants without this clearance cannot be considered.
Demonstrated experience as a WHS professional, with a strong understanding of the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (Cth).
Proven ability to conduct WHS risk assessments and site inspections, including in diverse and challenging international environments.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence and train staff at all levels.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage WHS incidents and investigations effectively.
Willingness and capacity to undertake international travel as required.
Desirable
A relevant qualification in WHS, such as a Diploma or Bachelor's degree.
Experience in the Australian Public Service or a similar government environment.
Knowledge of WHS requirements in an overseas context.
