About the role:
They are seeking a Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR) Technical Officer to join their team in Canberra supporting operations at the Mt. Stromlo (Canberra) SLR Facility. The role involves supporting all operational and maintenance activities associated with obtaining SLR data and other ancillary data, as well as contributing to the development of the associated software and data management systems.
Key Responsibilities:
- Leading operational activities to ensure a high level of data quality and productivity with minimal supervision.
- Occasionally working independently at night, including remote work.
- Providing technical troubleshooting.
- Assisting with preventative maintenance and servicing of equipment and facility.
- Providing customer technical support.
- Providing routine reporting and data management to clients.
- Supporting development, upgrades, and installation of system facilities applications and procedures.
About You:
This position is suited for individuals who are comfortable with diverse technical challenges and able to quickly learn and operate new equipment and software applications. Ideal candidates should have an interest in satellites, astronomy, aerospace industry activities, and skills in software, electronic, optical, and/or mechanical systems, along with a commitment to excellence, problem solving and automation.

- Good general knowledge of computing and networking technologies.
- Strong communication skills, essential for accurately articulating technical problems to engineering verbally or via DevOps.
- Proven ability to work in an operational environment.
- Willingness to work outside normal office hours, including evening or night shifts.
- Self-reliant with demonstrated teamwork experience.
Qualifications and Experience:
Essential:
- Experience with operational aspects of technical and complex systems
- Demonstrated ability to automate processes
- Basic to intermediate software development skills
- Ability to write technical documents
Desirable:
- Visualisation technologies and user experience improvement;
- Safety-critical software and systems automation;
- Real-time systems.
