We are seeking a skilled and safety-conscious Technical Officer to join a leading Melbourne-based institution's Analytical Biology team. This full-time, continuing position offers an opportunity to support teaching and research activities in a dynamic and collaborative environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Laboratory Operations: Oversee and maintain the day-to-day operational activities within Analytical Biology laboratories, ensuring compliance with current Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) legislation, regulations, and standards.

Equipment Management: Operate, calibrate, and maintain a broad range of analytical equipment, including flow cytometry, molecular biology instruments, sequencing platforms, and cell culture facilities.
Safety Compliance: Manage the safe use, handling, and disposal of hazardous materials and biosecurity-related substances, adhering to environmental and safety protocols.
Documentation & Reporting: Develop, maintain, and implement required documentation such as Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Safe Work Instructions (SWIs), Equipment Risk Assessments (RAs), Chemical Registers, etc., ensuring they are available to users of the laboratories or workspaces.
Technical Support & Training: Provide expert technical advice and support to academic staff, researchers, and students, facilitating practical classes and experiments. Develop and deliver training materials and inductions for laboratory users, ensuring all personnel are informed of safety procedures and equipment usage.
Maintenance & Troubleshooting: Manage preventative maintenance schedules and troubleshoot equipment faults to minimise downtime and ensure operational efficiency.
Laboratory Scheduling: Utilise equipment booking systems and laboratory scheduling tools to coordinate the use of laboratory resources effectively.
Selection Criteria
- OHS Knowledge: Demonstrated understanding of current OHS legislation with an emphasis on regulations, standards, and safe work practices relating to analytical biology, including AS2243, ADG, PC, OGTR, Biosecurity imports/exports, and Radiation.
- Laboratory Experience: Extensive hands-on experience in the routine operation, calibration, and maintenance of analytical equipment in flow cytometry, molecular biology, sequencing, and cell culture.
- Documentation Skills: Skilled in developing SOPs, SWIs, and Risk Assessments. Understanding and demonstrated knowledge of reviewing Risk Assessments, PEPARCs, and PARAs.
- Training & Induction: Demonstrated ability in user training and inductions and practical demonstration to ensure correct and safe use of equipment by researchers, staff, and students.
- Maintenance & Troubleshooting: Experience in managing preventative maintenance schedules and troubleshooting equipment faults to minimise downtime and ensure operational efficiency.
- Laboratory Scheduling: Demonstrated ability with equipment booking systems and laboratory scheduling.
- Hazardous Materials Handling: Demonstrated knowledge and experience working in a Biology laboratory in teaching or research setting including the safe use and handling of biosecurity and hazardous materials.
- Qualifications: Degree or higher qualifications in Analytical Biology/Biology or a related discipline and relevant experience. A valid Working with Children Check is mandatory.
