The Senior Systems Engineer within the Core Infrastructure team is responsible for the configuration, implementation, maintenance, and secure operation of infrastructure components including compute, storage, networking, and related software. The role contributes to the delivery of strategic technology transformation initiatives and supports a modern, agile, and security-focused IT environment. It also involves advising senior stakeholders and recommending innovative infrastructure solutions to address current and emerging technology challenges. The position operates within established IT policies, procedures, and industry best practices.
Organisational Environment
Reporting to the Infrastructure Manager within the Technology division, the Senior Systems Engineer is a key member of the Core Infrastructure team. The role interfaces with senior technology leaders, product teams, and staff across the organisation, as the infrastructure environment supports a broad range of technology solutions. This position also acts as an escalation point for complex technical issues related to underlying infrastructure performance or availability.
Key Accountabilities and Outcomes
Administer, configure, implement, and maintain infrastructure hardware and software systems.
Conduct patching, hardening, and system updates as required.
Identify and remediate cyber security vulnerabilities affecting infrastructure.
Manage converged infrastructure platforms, including configuration and maintenance.
Implement and support storage systems and related hardware.
Design, deploy, and support infrastructure solutions based on business and technical requirements.
Ensure secure administration of all infrastructure environments, including firewall and network security.
Deliver infrastructure projects independently or as part of a project team.
Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation for infrastructure solutions and environments.
Travel to branch offices for maintenance and audits when required.
Participate in after-hours maintenance activities.
Desired Experience and Capabilities
Strong knowledge of modern IT infrastructure, including HPE hardware and virtualised/cloud environments.
Proficient in:
Microsoft Windows Server (Active Directory, DNS, Group Policy, ADFS)
Linux operating systems
VMware (vCenter, SRM, Lifecycle Manager, ESX)
Microsoft Azure
Enterprise patching tools (Ansible, WSUS)
PAM solutions (CyberArk)
Monitoring tools (System Center, SolarWinds)
Preferred experience with:
Cisco networking, Qualys vulnerability management, and Tidal job scheduler
Veritas NetBackup, VMware NSX/NSX-T/V, and vRNI
PowerShell scripting and general network troubleshooting
Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle database administration
Security technologies (TLS, certificates, encryption)
Endpoint and device management (Intel NUC, Logitech peripherals)
Wireless (Cisco, HP), load balancers (F5), and firewalls (Fortinet)
Microsoft IIS and HPE Nimble storage
Familiarity with compliance standards such as ACSC Essential Eight, ISM, and PSPF is highly regarded.
