Are you passionate about making a tangible difference in biosecurity and community safety? We are seeking an experienced and driven Senior Engagement Officer (AO6) to lead strategic communication and stakeholder engagement initiatives for a nationally significant fire ant eradication program. Based in Brisbane CBD, this role offers a unique opportunity to spearhead projects that build community awareness, foster strong partnerships, and drive collaborative action to manage one of Australia’s most serious invasive pest threats.
In this position, you will be responsible for managing communication and engagement projects end-to-end—from initial concept development, through stakeholder consultation, approval, and implementation, to rigorous evaluation. You will create a diverse range of high-quality communication products, including campaign materials, training packages, website content, newsletters, factsheets, and magazine articles, all tailored to effectively inform and engage a variety of audiences. By drawing on well-established communication and engagement frameworks, you will design and deliver targeted public education and stakeholder engagement activities, including handling issues and crisis communication when sensitive situations arise.
You will play a critical role in scanning the landscape by monitoring social media, news outlets, community forums, and industry groups to identify emerging issues, trends, and opportunities. Your insights will inform timely strategic advice and the development of proactive communication approaches that mitigate risks and maximise positive engagement outcomes. Specifically, you will lead scoping and customer journey mapping activities for the Fire Ant Suppression Taskforce, helping to tailor engagement strategies that effectively address the needs and concerns of diverse stakeholders, including landholders, community groups, industry representatives, and government partners.
With limited direction, you will represent the program in direct negotiations and communications with key stakeholders, ensuring messaging is consistent, clear, and compliant with organisational policies and guidelines. You will be responsible for planning, executing, and evaluating regional awareness campaigns, providing strategic advice on the most effective communication methods to reach a wide range of communities, including culturally diverse and vulnerable groups.
Handling complaints and identifying potential reputational risks will be an important part of your role, as will escalating issues appropriately to maintain community trust and program integrity. You will contribute to the continuous improvement of team processes, policies, and systems that support effective stakeholder engagement and communication practices across the program.
Your role will also involve representing the program at community field days, workshops, and meetings with large landholders, delivering presentations and facilitating discussions to promote fire ant management options and encourage community involvement.
Working within a multidisciplinary team, you will foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement to ensure the program meets its objectives efficiently and effectively. This role requires some weekend work to support community events and stakeholder engagement activities.
