Role Overview
We are seeking a senior, hands-on Enterprise Integration Architect to lead the connectivity strategy for a landmark business transformation. This pivotal role sits at the intersection of our two largest technology streams, a comprehensive SAP S/4HANA implementation and a major Point-of-Sale & Retail Back-Office modernisation.
Operating within a crucial Common Design phase, you will serve as the core authority on how our next-generation SAP digital core safely and efficiently exchanges data with our distributed retail environment. This is a deeply technical, hands-on position within our Architecture practice. You will define the enterprise integration patterns, API contracts, canonical data models, and real-time data flows that allow these massive delivery streams and the future applications that follow to build and deploy independently.
Working under the technical direction of the Lead Programme Architect and alongside strategic Systems Integrators (SIs), you will focus heavily on the technology and delivery layer: ensuring platforms stay decoupled, data remains highly synchronised, and a legacy integration estate is successfully modernised into an agile, API-first ecosystem.
Key Responsibilities
SAP & Retail Integration Architecture
- S/4HANA Core Connectivity: Design and govern the integration specifications, API contracts, and interface patterns linking SAP S/4HANA with core retail back-office, POS, and edge systems.
- Hybrid Landscape Design: Architect robust, real-time, event-driven, and batch data-flow models optimised for a modern SAP ecosystem, heavily leveraging tools like SAP Integration Suite.
- Transition & Coexistence: Design complex interim integration states to manage parallel delivery. This includes ensuring seamless data synchronisation and zero business disruption while transitioning from legacy ERP environments to S/4HANA.
- Estate Modernisation: Drive the roadmap to rationalise a fragmented, multi-technology legacy integration footprint, consolidating it into a streamlined, consistent, and highly scalable target-state integration platform.
- NFR & Security Governance: Define strict non-functional requirements (throughput, latency, error-handling, resilience, and end-to-end monitoring) and establish a unified interface security approach across all SAP and retail boundary systems.
- De-risking via Prototyping: Build and execute targeted proofs of concept (PoCs) to validate high-risk, high-volume, or highly complex SAP integration points before designs are finalised.
Technical Leadership & Vendor Governance
- SI Collaboration: Act as the primary integration counterpart to program architects and external Systems Integrators, critically reviewing, challenging, and validating vendor-proposed SAP integration designs.
- Design Influence: Inject expert integration analysis and recommendations into cross-program Key Design Decisions (KDDs), ensuring dependencies and structural risks are surfaced early.
- Emerging Tech Advocacy: Stay at the forefront of SAP BTP (Business Technology Platform) evolution, modern API management, and event-streaming paradigms, applying these to a complex, multi-site corporate retail environment.
Documentation & Best Practice
- Clear Blueprinting: Maintain flawless, unambiguous integration documentation, including patterns, schemas, and implementation guides, to allow distributed development teams to build without friction.
- Data Protection: Ensure data privacy and security are hardcoded into every interface, strictly meeting regional regulatory compliance and healthcare/pharmacy data obligations where relevant.
Essential Experience & Skills
- Core Integration Expertise: Circa 7+ years in technology roles, with a proven track record operating as an Integration Architect on large-scale enterprise programs.
- Deep SAP Domain Knowledge: Extensive, hands-on experience designing and executing integrations explicitly for SAP S/4HANA.
- SAP Tooling Mastery: Strong technical proficiency with the SAP Integration Suite (Advanced Event Mesh, Cloud Integration, API Management) and an understanding of how to transition away from legacy SAP middleware or point-to-point setups.
- Design Paradigms: Mastery of API-led connectivity, event-driven architecture (EDA), canonical data modeling, and handling both high-velocity real-time events and high-volume batch processing.
- Coexistence Strategies: Proven capability designing data-bridge and coexistence architectures required during multi-year ERP migrations.
- SI & Vendor Management: Demonstrated ability to confidently review, critique, and align technical designs delivered by major global Systems Integrators.
- Cloud Architecture: Solid understanding of cloud-native integration patterns (e.g., AWS environment topologies).
Experience with retail enterprise ecosystems, specifically Point-of-Sale (POS) systems, store operations, or dispensary/pharmacy data structures.
