Randstad is partnering with a leading structural steel fabrication client in the Western Suburbs of Melbourne to recruit a highly motivated and experienced Production Workshop Manager. About the role:
You will be the key operational leader responsible for converting project designs into high-quality fabricated steel structures. Your leadership will be crucial in ensuring seamless workflow, resource optimisation, and the achievement of all production deadlines.
- Production Planning: Work alongside the Procurement & Planning Manager to schedule, plan, and manage all fabrication activities for upcoming projects.
- Safety & Compliance: Following and monitoring adherence to all Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) procedures and safe working practices in line with Australian Standards.
- Workflow Management: Conduct detailed pre-production assessments of drawings to anticipate risks and resource needs. Ensure project schedules are achieved through planned work allocation for processing, assembly, and welding.
- Team Leadership: Supervise, manage, and lead staff and contractors (Boilermakers, Welders), including rostering, task allocation, and workflow management.
- Quality & Technical Oversight: Read and interpret structural drawings to ensure high quality fabrication. Provide technical support and problem-solving to resolve fabrication queries swiftly.
- Continuous Improvement: Implement and enforce best practices, process improvement, and efficiency initiatives across the workshop.
- System Management: Ensure items are correctly tracked and coordinate the direction of steel to the relevant post-production treatment phases.
- Maintenance: Ensure all production machinery and tools are operational, fit for purpose, and properly maintained.
About you:
Our client is looking for a candidate who combines hands-on fabrication knowledge with strong leadership and organisational capabilities.
Essential Experience & Skills:
- Previous experience managing, supervising, or coordinating production operations (especially in structural steel).
- Relevant degree qualification in Manufacturing / Engineering
- Proven experience supervising, managing, and leading staff and contractors.
- A strong safety focus and experience working in line with Australian WHS Standards.
- Exceptional organisational skills: managing time, priorities, and allocating tasks to meet tight deadlines.
- Strong ability to read and interpret complex structural drawings.
- Excellent people skills, including the ability to build rapport, negotiate, and manage expectations across the team.
- Flexibility and a proactive, collaborative approach, including Saturday availability for work.
Highly Regarded:
- Qualified Boilermaker (preferred).
- Workplace Health & Safety Certification.
- Dogman Certified and/or Forklift Licence.
- First Aid Certificate.
- Strong/advanced Excel capability.
