The Role
As a Policy Officer, you will be at the core of government decision-making. You will use your excellent research, analytical, and communication skills to develop evidence-based policy advice for senior leaders and Ministers.
Key Responsibilities will include:
Conducting research and analysis on complex policy issues, identifying trends, and assessing impacts.
Drafting high-quality policy advice, including Cabinet Submissions, Ministerial Briefings, and reports.
Consulting and engaging with a diverse range of stakeholders (government agencies, community groups, and industry) to gather input and build consensus.
Contributing to the implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of policies and legislative reforms.
Representing the Department in various inter-agency working groups and forums.
Stakeholder Engagement & Coordination
Consult and engage proactively with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders (other government agencies, local governments, industry, and community groups) to gather input and build consensus.
Provide timely and accurate policy advice and support to internal project teams, committees, and working groups.
Represent the Department effectively in inter-agency and inter-governmental forums.
Project & Governance Support
Coordinate and manage specific policy-related projects or tasks, ensuring delivery is on time, within budget, and meets desired policy outcomes.
Contribute to the ongoing monitoring and evaluation of policy effectiveness against agreed performance indicators.
Maintain accurate and auditable records of policy development, consultation, and advice in line with public sector governance principles.
What You'll Bring (Essential Criteria)
We are seeking a proactive and motivated professional with:
Policy Expertise: Demonstrated experience in policy research, analysis, development, and drafting advice within a government or complex public sector environment.
Analytical and Conceptual Skills: The ability to analyse complex information, identify critical issues, and develop practical, evidence-based solutions.
Communication and Interpersonal Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to convey complex information clearly and persuasively to diverse audiences, and build effective working relationships.
Drive for Results: Strong organisational skills and proven ability to manage multiple priorities, work autonomously, and deliver high-quality outcomes within tight deadlines.
Relevant Qualifications: A tertiary qualification in Public Policy, Political Science, Law, Economics, or a related discipline is highly desirable.
