This is a critical role responsible for ensuring the health, preservation, and strategic management of the Council's tree assets in one of Melbourne's most desirable and tree-lined suburbs.
The Opportunity
We are seeking a highly skilled individual to join the Statutory Planning team for a contract period of 6 to 12 months.
As the Planning Arborist, you will be the key specialist providing arboricultural expertise on all planning and development matters. Your work will directly contribute to maintaining and enhancing the Council's significant urban forest.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide high-level, specialist arboricultural advice and recommendations on planning applications, development proposals, and tree protection requirements under the Planning Scheme.
- Conduct on-site tree inspections and risk assessments to inform statutory planning decisions.
- Review and respond to Arboricultural Reports submitted as part of planning applications.
- Collaborate closely with Statutory Planners, Landscape Architects, and Enforcement Officers.
- Assist in the enforcement of local laws and planning permit conditions related to tree protection and removal.
What We Are Looking For
- Tertiary qualifications in Arboriculture, Urban Forestry, or a related discipline.
- Proven experience in a Planning Arborist, Consulting Arborist, or similar role, preferably within a Local Government environment.
- Excellent understanding and application of the relevant Australian Standards, particularly those related to tree protection on development sites.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for writing clear, defensible reports and advising both colleagues and the public.
- A high level of technical proficiency, ideally aligned with a Band 6 or 7 Council position.
