Data Engineer - Azure Databricks Specialist | Initial Contract until June 2026

We're partnering with a prominent Queensland Government organisation to find a talented individual to join their dynamic team. This initial contract runs from September/October 2025 until 30 June 2026, with a strong possibility of extension.
About the Project
Our client is undertaking a significant data transformation project, building fit-for-purpose data assets within an Azure Databricks environment. This initiative is crucial for achieving their comprehensive Data, BI, and Analytics requirements, enabling enhanced decision-making and insights generation for their core operations.
The Opportunity
As a Data Engineer, you'll play a critical role in developing robust and scalable datasets (Standardised/Silver and Consumer/Gold layers) according to new data models. You'll work closely with data professionals and business stakeholders, translating complex business requirements into high-quality, structured data assets.
This is a full-time, onsite position based at our client's modern offices at 1 William St, Brisbane City.
Key Deliverables
... Reconfigure existing pipelines for intraday refreshes.
Create new or refactor existing datasets around core business entities (Claims, Policies, Contacts, Documents, Payments, Assets/Exposures).
Produce comprehensive technical documentation for all new datasets.
Support the implementation of data quality fixes.
Assist with refactoring existing reporting.
What You'll Bring
Essential Skills & Experience:
Demonstrated experience building data assets within a medallion architecture (or equivalent: Raw, Standardised, Consumer layers).
Proficiency in SQL and Python within relational database management systems, including Type 2 Change Data Capture.
Proficiency in cloud data warehousing concepts and technologies, including ETL/ELT pipeline development and data integration (e.g., Databricks, Snowflake, Synapse, Redshift).
Experience conducting data lineage and impact analysis to ensure data integrity and traceability.
A solid understanding of the principles of data governance.
Highly Regarded (Desirable):
Experience within a data team in an insurance business or other highly regulated environment.
Familiarity with management and operations within Databricks, Delta Lake, Azure Data Lake Storage, Azure Synapse.
Familiarity with Appian (insurance software).
Experience in developing Power BI reports and semantic models.
Experience in performance optimisation activities across queries, scripts, ETL/ELT pipelines, and process workflows.
A University Degree in Data Analytics, Computer Science, or a related field.
