We are seeking enthusiastic and committed individuals for exciting short-term Technical Assistant roles in the Horsham region. You can choose to apply for a role focused either on Fieldwork or Laboratory Support.
The Opportunities
Technical Assistant - Field
This physically active role is primarily based outdoors and is essential for the collection of high-quality research samples.
Key Field Responsibilities:
- Plant Sampling: Carefully select individual plants (grains, peas, lentils, etc.) by hand, accurately filling sample bags. This task requires squatting, bending, and lots of walking across field sites.
- Harvesting: Perform Whole Row Plant Picking by hand and assist with the efficient collection of large quantities of crops while riding in the Harvester machine.
- Crop Maintenance: Perform Hand Weeding using a hoe, requiring attention to detail and consistent effort.
- Logistics: Safely load plant samples into vehicles (utes) for transportation (Sample Loading).
- Data Records: Assist with Data Entry of collected field information.
Technical Assistant - Laboratory
This role is focused on precision and meticulous processes within a laboratory environment, preparing samples for analysis.
Key Laboratory Responsibilities:
- Sample Processing: Assist with the preparation of samples, including grinding using specialised equipment and meticulous cleaning procedures. Utilise a sifter to process grain samples efficiently.
- Organisation: Ensure accurate and clear labelling of all samples and assist with the movement of samples using trolleys.
- Data & Records: Accurately collating experimental data and maintaining comprehensive electronic records as directed, including interpreting bar codes and performing Data Entry.
- General Duties: Be comfortable with tasks that involve periods of sitting or standing and may be repetitive in nature.
Who We Are Looking For
The ideal candidate for either role is a proactive and committed individual who is:
- Someone with strong attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy in all tasks.
- A team player who is comfortable working effectively as a collaborative member of a dynamic team.
- Possesses basic computer literacy and the ability to learn new electronic record-keeping systems.
- Willing to adhere strictly to laboratory protocols and safety guidelines (applies to both roles for general site conduct).
- Embraces flexible working arrangements and is open to undertaking a variety of tasks within the division.
- Experience in a laboratory or agricultural setting is desirable but not essential.
Successful candidates MUST live in Horsham or surrounds.
