As the Environment and Waste Officer, you will be the hands-on driving force behind North West Tasmania’s green future. Bridging the gap between strategy and action, overseeing local waste facilities and rolling out the councils Greening and Resource Recovery plans.
This is a high-energy role where technical expertise meets operational grit. Working with contractors and regional partners, to ensure that services stay compliant, efficient, and community-focused.

Key Responsibilities:
- Strategic Delivery & Innovation: Lead the implementation and reporting of Council’s Waste, Greening, and Stewardship strategies, while identifying opportunities for funding, grants, and innovative service improvements.
- Operational & Contract Oversight: Supervise daily waste operations - including collection, landfills, and transfer stations - ensuring contractors meet safety, performance, and budgetary requirements.
- Compliance & Technical Monitoring: Conduct on-ground inspections and technical monitoring (including water quality and Port Latta EPN) to ensure all environmental and waste obligations meet regulatory standards.
- Stakeholder & Community Liaison: Act as the technical expert and escalation point for customer inquiries, while collaborating with regional partners to align local initiatives with State priorities.
About you
- Relevant qualifications in waste management, environmental management sustainability or a related field, or demonstrated equivalent experience.
- Hold current Drivers Licence, Working with Vulnerable People Check and hold or be willing to obtain a current police check.
- Proven experience in waste operations or environmental service delivery, backed by a solid understanding of relevant legislation and compliance.
- Skilled in overseeing contractor performance, administering service delivery, and accurately analysing operational or environmental data.
- Strong interpersonal skills for resolving customer inquiries, coupled with the ability to collaborate effectively within a team environment.
- High-level administrative, digital, and numerical literacy with the ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced setting.
