Location: Multiple Council Sites (Metropolitan Melbourne)
Employment Type: Ongoing Contract / Temporary Positions Available
Shift Roster: Rotating roster with early morning starts (commencing from 3:30 AM – 5:00 PM), including scheduled weekend overtime.
Are you a reliable driver with an HR/MR licence who loves keeping the community looking its best? We are currently partnering with multiple local councils across Melbourne to recruit dedicated Street Cleansing Driver/Operators to join their active City Infrastructure divisions.
If you are an early riser who enjoys a dynamic outdoor environment where no two days are the same, this is your chance to step into a secure, well-regarded public sector service framework.
This unit operates on a highly flexible, rotating shift basis to maintain municipal presentation standards.
Standard shift windows run between 3:30 AM and 5:00 PM.
Regular scheduled overtime is available to support crucial Saturday and Sunday morning community maintenance programs.
Operating both independently and as part of a collaborative mobile unit, your day-to-day operations will involve:
Mechanical Plant Operation: Safely driving and operating Medium Rigid (MR) vehicles, compactors, small footpath suction sweepers, or Jet/Vac combination units.
Civic Cleansing Duties: Clearing dumped rubbish, managing roadside litter collection, servicing public bins, and performing graffiti maintenance.
Drainage Maintenance: Assisting with the cleaning and clearing of roadside pits, drains, and easements using specialised combo trucks.
Manual Labour Support: Conducting physical sweeping and debris removal around urban impediments (traffic islands, planter boxes, and shopping precincts) where large sweepers cannot reach.
Vehicle & Asset Maintenance: Performing routine daily pre-start safety checks, reporting mechanical faults immediately, and ensuring your vehicle is washed, cleaned, and disinfected for the next shift.
Public Courtesy: Acting as a professional face of the council while working in the public eye, managing resident inquiries politely, and reporting asset defects (like potholes or fallen branches) to your supervisor.
Mandatory Requirements:
Licence: Current Victorian Driver’s Licence with Medium Rigid (MR) endorsement minimum.
Compliance Checks: A current National Police Check and a valid Working with Children Check (WWCC).
Safety Gear: Commitment to wearing mandatory Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including steel-cap boots.
Roster Flexibility: Proven reliability and availability to adapt to varying early morning start times (from 3:30 AM) and weekend rosters.
Experience & Skills:
Demonstrated experience driving commercial trucks or compactors within busy, high-density residential or built-up urban areas.
Prior experience in street cleansing, open space maintenance, waste management, or civil labouring fields.
Desirable: Practical experience operating a small suction sweeper or a Jet/Vac combination truck.
Physical Fitness: Capacity to handle regular physical manual work, repetitive bending, lifting, and working in outdoor, dusty, or wet weather conditions.
Communication: Basic written and verbal English skills to follow detailed work instructions, update daily log sheets, and operate two-way radios.
Predictable Routines: Work within structured, well-established daily council programs.
Excellent Penalty Rates: Boost your earnings via structured weekend shifts and emergency overtime programs.
Public Sector Foot-in-the-Door: Establish yourself within local municipal networks, unlocking future permanent civil crew opportunities.
If you have a "can-do" attitude, the required driving licences, and are ready to hit the ground running immediately, we want to hear from you.
