The Role
As the Signalling Design Manager, you will be responsible for the technical integrity and delivery of signalling design packages. This is a leadership role requiring a balance of high-level technical governance and team management. You will oversee the transition from concept to commissioned system, ensuring all designs are safe, compliant, and fit for purpose.
Core Responsibilities
Technical Governance: Act as the lead authority for signalling design, ensuring compliance with [Network/Standard] and statutory requirements.
Safety & Assurance: Lead the safety-critical design process, managing SIL4 systems and ensuring all risks are mitigated to ALARP.
Team Leadership: Manage a team of Designers and Verifiers. Oversee resource planning and provide technical mentorship to maintain competency standards (IRSE).
Interface Management: Coordinate with Civil, P-Way, and Telecoms disciplines to resolve design conflicts early in the project lifecycle.
Delivery: Manage design budgets, schedules, and change control, ensuring designs are constructible within planned possession windows.
Selection Criteria
Technical Background: Extensive experience in signalling design (Relay, SSI, or Digital Interlocking).
Safety Leadership: Strong grasp of CSM-RA or equivalent safety assurance frameworks.
Credentials: Degree in Engineering and an IRSE Design Manager (or equivalent) license.
Project Experience: Demonstrated success managing design packages for large-scale rail infrastructure.
Communication: Ability to manage stakeholder expectations and provide clear technical direction under pressure.
