About the Opportunity
Are you a seasoned engineering professional looking to step into a high-impact leadership seat? This premier multi-disciplinary building services consultancy is seeking a dynamic Senior Mechanical Engineer to spearhead our Western Australian design division.
In this role, you won't just perform computations, you will lead, mentor, and act as a pivotal project driver, bridging the gap between innovative concept designs and successful physical construction. Reporting directly to the Managing Director, you will hold autonomy over project lifecycles, cultivate key client relationships, and guide a passionate group of onshore and offshore engineers and drafters.
Overall ResponsibilitiesDesign Champion: Manage and deliver world-class mechanical designs seamlessly across all project phases—from embryonic concepts to final construction delivery.
People & Performance Leader: Mentor, coach, and support team members to cultivate sustained technical growth, capability, and operational consistency.
Quality Guardian: Oversee rigorous QA/QC processes to ensure the absolute integrity, safety, and regulatory compliance of design outputs.
Technical Interface: Provide agile, ad-hoc technical design input where required and maintain exceptional, trust-based relationships with clients and industry stakeholders.
Technical Excellence & Compliance
Lead and critically review fire and mechanical protection engineering designs, performing independent design checks and arithmetical verifications.
Ensure all engineering deliverables flawlessly comply with the National Construction Code (NCC), Building Code of Australia (BCA), and relevant Australian Standards.
Prepare detailed concept designs, tender/construction packages, and rigorous project documentation aligned explicitly with client briefs.
Harness value engineering (VE) principles to unlock cost-effective, high-value solutions without compromising asset quality or compliance.
Actively liaise with local regulatory bodies and fire departments where required.
Leadership & Team Development
Provide technical direction to both localized onshore and offshore engineering resources to maintain output efficiency.
Drive overall team performance to achieve tight project deadlines through structured planning, clear delegation, and strategic resource allocation.
Champion a high-performance, supportive, and communicative team culture.
Project, Client & System Governance
Lead proactive multi-disciplinary coordination with structural, electrical, and hydraulic engineers to ensure fully integrated building services solutions.
Organise, lead, and chair internal and external project meetings, ensuring minutes and clear action items are promptly issued.
Oversee contractual alignment by thoroughly understanding signed fee proposals, proactively flag, document, and negotiate variations with clients when scopes shift.
Update the internal Job Management System daily to keep project progress, milestones, and billable hours meticulously tracked.
Complete comprehensive design checklists across disciplines and author valuable "lessons learnt" reviews post-project completion.
Ownership: Take total ownership of client-facing correspondence, driving clear, successful outcomes for all invested parties.
Alignment: Launch and run project kick-off meetings to ensure the delivery team has a crystal-clear understanding of scopes, budgets, and expectations from day one.
Streamlined Communication: Act as the central filter for RFIs and Technical Queries (TQs) across all disciplines before client issuance, avoiding fragmented, drip-fed communication.
Master Governance: Maintain unwavering oversight of project timelines, project files, and overall quality assurance (QA) compliance.
Required Qualifications & Experience
Education: Tertiary qualifications in Mechanical Engineering (Minimum: Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering).
Professional Standings: Formal CPEng (Chartered Professional Engineer) and NER (National Engineering Register) registrations are highly regarded.
Tenure: A minimum of 5+ years of post-graduate experience spent actively working within a recognized building services design consultancy.
Leadership History: Proven track record in managing, coaching, mentoring, and driving accountability within engineering teams.
Technical Toolkit & Core Skills
Design Mastery: Highly proficient in executing mechanical services design calculations, including CAMEL/HAP Heat load calculations and External Static Pressure (ESP) calculations.
Technical Literacy: A deep conceptual understanding of CFD modelling alongside strong multi-disciplinary project coordination skills.
Software Fluency: Competent use of Microsoft Office suite and specialised project tracking tools.
Communication: Refined written, verbal, and presentation communication skills, with an analytical eye for detail.
