The Opportunity
We are seeking a proactive and detail-oriented Technical Officer to provide high-quality support within our Chemistry teaching laboratories. Based at our vibrant City Campus, you will play a vital role in ensuring the safe and effective delivery of practical classes and research support.
Reporting to the Technical Coordinator, you will manage the preparation of materials, equipment maintenance, and the day-to-day housekeeping that keeps our world-class facilities running smoothly.
Key Responsibilities
Lab Preparation: Prepare reagents and solutions, set up practical class equipment, and manage the pack-down and cleaning of learning spaces.
Technical Support: Provide hands-on assistance to students and staff, ensuring equipment readiness and providing training on basic laboratory tools.
Maintenance & Calibration: Operate and maintain common chemistry equipment (balances, pH meters, UV-Vis spectrometers, rotary evaporators), performing routine checks and first-line troubleshooting.
Safety & Compliance: Manage chemical, gas, and waste handling in accordance with OHS policies. Assist with risk assessments, SOP documentation, and chemical registers.
Operational Support: Monitor inventory levels, maintain maintenance logs, and contribute to a collaborative, service-oriented team culture.
About You
To be successful in this role, you will bring a blend of technical expertise and strong organizational skills. We are looking for:
Laboratory Experience: Proven experience in a chemistry teaching or research lab, specifically in solution preparation and class set-up.
Technical Proficiency: Ability to calibrate and troubleshoot standard chemistry instrumentation.
Safety Focus: A solid understanding of laboratory compliance, including chemical waste management and gas cylinder safety.
Communication Skills: The ability to work effectively with a diverse range of staff and students, providing clear technical guidance.
Adaptability: Excellent time-management skills to meet tight teaching schedules and shifting priorities during peak periods.
Qualifications & Requirements
A tertiary qualification in Chemistry, Environmental Science, or a related discipline, and/or equivalent professional experience.
A valid Victorian Working with Children Check (or willingness to obtain one).
Must be available to work full-time on-site at our City Campus.
