Our Melbourne-based University is currently seeking a proactive and highly skilled Technical Officer to join our STEM College. This 6-month contract role is vital to our operations as we expand our laboratory capacity and welcome an increased volume of students.
Based at our Bundoora West campus, you will be the backbone of our Food and Process Chemistry laboratories. You will ensure that our teaching and research environments are operating at an elite level—safely, efficiently, and with a focus on student success.
Key Responsibilities
Under the guidance of the Technical Coordinator, you will oversee the day-to-day operations of our workspaces. Your day-to-day will involve:
...Operational Excellence: Maintaining Food and Process Chemistry labs and ensuring they are "ready-for-action" for students and researchers.
Safety & Compliance: Developing and maintaining SOPs, SWIs, and Chemical Registers in line with legislative requirements and University policies.
Expert Support: Providing agile, client-centric advice and inductions to lab users regarding equipment, instruments, and best practices.
Infrastructure Management: Managing the servicing and maintenance of complex equipment (DSC, Rheometers, Particle Sizing, etc.) and overseeing consumable stock levels.
Collaboration: Working with the Technical Coordinator and broader STEM Facilities team to implement remediation plans and install new equipment.
What You Bring
To be successful in this role, you will possess a blend of technical expertise and strong interpersonal skills. We are looking for:
Technical Proficiency: Hands-on experience with equipment such as DSC, Rheometer, Particle Sizing equipment, Freeze Dryers, and FTIR.
Industry Experience: Proven background working within Food Science, Chemical Engineering, or high-level Research environments.
Safety First Mindset: A deep understanding of OH&S legislation and industry standards within a laboratory setting.
Proactive Problem Solver: The ability to work autonomously, stay organised under pressure, and contribute positively to a team culture.
Communication: Excellent oral and written skills with the ability to train a diverse range of students and staff.
