Are you a First Nations professional who wants to make an impact on a national scale by reviewing, shaping, and developing strategic advisory frameworks and policy?
I am currently partnering with a prominent Federal Government client in the disability sector to recruit an exciting and specialised role: First Nations Independent Advisor (EL1 equivalent). This is a critical special measures position within the Co-design and Engagement division , designed for an individual from the First Nations community with a deep understanding of First Nations people, particularly those living with disabilities.
About the Opportunity
Working closely with a Principal Member (Chairperson) and an Independent Advisory Council (IAC) , you will be primarily responsible for supporting the First Nations reference group. You will bring your cultural expertise and technical knowledge to help develop, write, and refine expert advice aimed at making structural systems better for First Nations participants.
Key Responsibilities:
- Development of Advice: Researching, planning, and writing formal pieces of strategic advice, papers, and reports in plain English for government and board review.
- Capacity Building & Mentoring: Supporting and creating culturally safe spaces for First Nations reference group members , helping build their capacity through peer support and professional conduct sessions.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Facilitating steering groups and discussions , maintaining strong relationships with council members, secretariat teams, and sector experts.
- Meeting Representation: Attending critical hybrid, virtual, and face-to-face reference group and out-of-session meetings , and delivering key outcomes reports to the Principal Member.
Ideally you will possess:
- Community Knowledge: Deep understanding of the First Nations community, culture, and the specific intersecting challenges faced by First Nations people living with a disability.
- Strategic Writing Skills: Demonstrated experience writing technical advice, discussion papers, or reports for government organisations using clear, accessible plain English.
- Critical Thinking & Problem Solving: Capability to interpret complex policy frameworks , evaluate risk , and translate qualitative information into actionable structural improvements.
- Relationship Management: Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to influence , collaborate across remote team environments , and manage demanding, changing workloads.
