Data Governance Specialist | Queensland Government Sector
Are you a data governance expert with a talent for establishing frameworks and embedding best practices within complex environments? We are seeking a seasoned Data Governance Specialist for a critical engagement within a prominent Queensland Government entity.
The Opportunity
Operating within the insurance arm of the state government, this role is pivotal in establishing formal data ownership and governance across the entire organisation. Leveraging an existing framework, you will be responsible for developing comprehensive policies, onboarding key data roles, and ensuring rigorous compliance across all datasets.
This is a contract position running from 2 March until 30 June 2026, based full-time onsite at a premier Brisbane CBD location.
Key Deliverables
As the Data Governance Specialist, your primary focus will be to:
Develop and formalise a bespoke data governance policy and associated procedures specifically tailored to the organisation’s needs.
Onboard and train key data governance roles, including Data Stewards and Data Custodians.
Ensure compliance with high-level data standards, focusing specifically on data quality, data lineage, and data integrity across all systems.
Produce documentation and training materials to support the long-term adoption of governance policies.
Collaborate closely with technical data professionals and business stakeholders to embed governance principles into daily operations.
About You
To be successful in this role, you will demonstrate:
Proven Experience: A strong track record in developing and implementing data governance frameworks, policies, and procedures.
Technical Knowledge: A deep understanding of data quality, lineage, and integrity principles.
Stakeholder Engagement: Exceptional communication skills with the ability to bridge the gap between technical teams and non-technical business stakeholders.
Training Capability: Experience in onboarding and mentoring roles such as Data Stewards and Custodians.
Industry Background: Previous experience working within the insurance sector or a similarly highly regulated environment.
...Highly Regarded Skills:
Familiarity with Medallion Architecture (Raw, Standardised, Consumer layers).
Knowledge of Azure Databricks or equivalent cloud data platforms.
