- Location: Queanbeyan (Servicing Canberra & Regional NSW)
- Travel: Heavy local regional travel + interstate trips monthly (with overnight stays)
About the Company
Our client is within the fire and safety sector based out of Queanbeyan. Operating in an industry where compliance, responsiveness, and trust are non-negotiable, they provide critical safety solutions to commercial, residential, and tier-1 construction clients. Due to strong market demand and strategic growth plans, they are now seeking a high-calibre Business Development Manager to increase their sales pipeline and drive revenue expansion.
About the Role
This is a role designed for a commercial sales professional who thrives on the road, building face-to-face relationships and closing high-value contracts. This is a new role for the business and while you will be supported by an internal team, the primary focus is pure business development, identifying new market opportunities, securing formal appointments with key decision-makers, and converting leads into long-term commercial accounts.
This role does require travel, split between the local market and travelling interstate to capture wider projects.
Key Responsibilities
New Business Generation & Pipeline Growth
- Identify, target, and secure new commercial business opportunities across Canberra, and the surrounding capital region.
- Initiate contact with property managers, tier-1/2 builders, compliance officers, and strata managers to secure formal presentations and tender opportunities.
- Conduct thorough on-site assessments to understand client compliance needs, delivering tailored fire and safety solutions rather than a transactional pitch.
- Lead the preparation and submission of comprehensive commercial proposals, ensuring alignment with client requirements and company profit margins.
Territory & Market Expansion
- Actively manage your schedule to maintain a high-visibility presence on the ground across the region.
- Undertake interstate overnight trips to pitch to national accounts, secure large-scale contracts, and establish new regional footprints.
- Stay ahead of building code changes, industry regulations, and competitor movements to position our client as the preferred provider.
Strategic Sales Leadership
- Work closely with the internal sales team to align lead generation with overall company revenue objectives.
- Review the active sales pipeline weekly to identify any friction points in the sales cycle - step in to assist with closing complex deals, and ensure momentum is maintained.
- Maintain meticulous records of client interactions, upcoming opportunities, and forecasting metrics within the CRM to guide strategic decision-making.
What You Bring
- Minimum 3-5 years of experience in a Business Development or Commercial Sales role, ideally within construction, building materials, trade services, or the fire/safety sector.
- A proven track record of successfully opening doors, cold-calling, and converting cold prospects into loyal clients.
- Outstanding communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to build immediate rapport with both site managers and corporate executives.
- Highly self-motivated, disciplined with time management, and comfortable working autonomously while frequently on the road.
- A valid Australian driver’s license is essential, along with a genuine willingness to undertake heavy local driving and required interstate overnight trips.
- A solid understanding of workplace health and safety (WHS) and building compliance standards is highly regarded.
