Randstad is proud to partner with a prominent State Government organization dedicated to public health and safety. We are seeking several dedicated Tobacco Regulatory Control Officers to join the Centre for Regulation and Enforcement (CRE).
Position Overview
- Pay Rate: $55 per hour + Super
- Location: Based in St Leonards with daily travel across Greater Sydney, Wollongong, and the Central Coast.
- Contract Length: 12-month temporary assignment, potential to go permamnent.
- Work Style: Office-based with daily travel using fleet vehicles. Enjoy flexibility with potential for one day per week working from home for administrative and brief-writing tasks.
Role Responsibilities
Working within the Tobacco and E-cigarettes Compliance Unit, you will focus on stationary and reactive compliance to enforce the Public Health (Tobacco) Act 2008 and the Poisons and Therapeutic Goods Act 1966.
- Covert Operations: Conduct "undercover buys" of illegal vapes or illicit tobacco acting as a member of the public.
- Overt Inspections: Enter premises in teams (at times in conjunction with Police) to identify and seize illegal products.
- Enforcement Action: Issue penalty notices and manage significant enforcement actions, including store closures of up to 90 days.
- Evidence Management: Maintain a strict chain of evidence, write detailed statements, and prepare comprehensive prosecution briefs.
- Reporting: Research and coordinate targeted compliance activities in high-risk areas to optimize regulatory outcomes.
Key Selection Criteria
- Experience: A background in compliance, investigation, or local/federal government (e.g., Fair Trading, Council, Federal Government, or Police).
- Regulatory Knowledge: Experience interpreting legislation and a Certificate IV in Government Investigations (or equivalent) is highly desirable.
- Technical Skills: Strong attention to detail, proficiency in contemporaneous note-taking, and computer literacy. Experience with Content Manager (Trim) or FIMS is a plus.
- Conflict De-escalation: Proven ability to manage difficult interactions and remain calm under pressure when dealing with uncooperative members of the public.
- Requirements: A current NSW Driver’s License is essential. A mandatory National Police Check will be conducted (Working with Children Check is not required).
Training & Culture
You will receive extensive training on relevant Acts, risk assessments, and situational awareness to ensure you are confident in the field.
