About the Role
The Senior Legal Counsel – IT reports to the Director of Legal Affairs and is responsible for providing expert legal advice and support across Brisbane 2032’s technology, privacy and data programmes.
The role will lead negotiations and advise on critical technology and digital projects along with privacy and data governance matters. Come and be a critical part of ensuring the delivery of all facets of technology services for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, from ticketing to the recording of world records through to enabling global broadcasting expected to reach 5 billion viewers worldwide.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide expert legal support to Brisbane 2032 across all aspects of the technology programme including Privacy and Data.
- Lead complex, high-value contract negotiations to secure the delivery of critical technology services for the Games.
- Ensure compliance with applicable privacy, data governance and regulatory obligations associated with Games technology systems, digital platforms and operations.
- Advise on cross-border data use, sharing and governance issues including compliance with applicable Australian and international privacy and data protection obligations.
- Deliver timely, fit-for-purpose legal advice to support strategic decision-making while providing agile support across Brisbane 2032’s 55 other Functional Areas, collaborating closely to mitigate legal risks and build strong relationships with key internal and external stakeholders.
- Ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations and IOC/IPC governance frameworks.
Skills and Experience
- Demonstrated specialist experience advising across technology, privacy and data within Australia.
- Experience in Queensland Information Technology Contracting (QITC) is desirable.
- Outstanding contract negotiation and drafting skills with proven experience delivering commercially sound and legally robust outcomes for complex, high value agreements.
- Strong understanding of privacy, data governance and regulatory compliance obligations, including cross-border data considerations. Knowledge of GDPR or other international privacy frameworks, though not essential, will be highly regarded.
- Expertise gained in a top-tier law firm or in-house legal team with experience supporting major projects, critical infrastructure or complex operational environments.
- Admitted to practice law in Australia and holds a current practising certificate.
- Proven capability to deliver high-quality, timely, and fit-for-purpose legal advice in a fast-paced, high-stakes environment, offering pragmatic solutions that expertly balance legal risk with commercial and operational needs.
- Demonstrated ability to build rapport and adapt communication style to suit a range of stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability and willingness to ‘roll up sleeves’ and take on any level of work as required in a small team.
