The Opportunity
Step into a high-level advisory role within a key Government department. We are seeking a Principal Underwriter (AO8) to lead complex risk assessments and provide authoritative insurance advice that impacts a significant state wide portfolio.
This is an initial 6-month contract with a strong possibility of extension, offering a seasoned insurance professional the chance to drive strategic outcomes at the intersection of finance, policy, and public service.
Key Responsibilities
In this senior leadership capacity, you will:
...- Manage Annual Renewals: Oversee the end-to-end premium determination process, ensuring agencies are appropriately covered based on expert analysis of assets and liabilities.
- Strategic Actuarial Review: Act as the primary interface for the State Actuary, providing expert review of advice regarding future liabilities.
- High-Level Advisory: Deliver authoritative advice to Government on indemnity aspects of procurement, contractual matters, and policy implementation strategies.
- Catastrophe Risk Management: Collaboratively design and manage reinsurance program solutions for whole-of-Government catastrophe risks.
- Performance Monitoring: Analyse claims trends and insurance industry data to identify factors affecting the portfolio's operational health.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Develop and foster professional relationships with insured agencies and the department’s insurance brokers.
- Governance & Briefing: Prepare complex correspondence, submissions, and ministerial briefings for executive management.
About You
While we are looking for a specific skill set, we value diverse experiences across the insurance landscape. We would love to hear from you if you bring a combination of:
- Insurance Background: Previous experience in a similar insurance agency, government insurance fund, or large corporate insurance environment.
- Core Knowledge: A solid grasp of insurance principles and a practical understanding of how renewal processes work from start to finish.
- Strategic Thinking: The ability to look at complex data like actuarial reports or industry trends and provide clear, insightful advice.
- Stakeholder Skills: Comfort in engaging with a variety of partners, from internal management to external brokers and agencies.
- Professional Communication: Experience (or a strong aptitude) for preparing high-quality reports, briefings, or professional correspondence
