EL1 Assistant Director Strategic Policy

Are you an experienced policy professional with a knack for turning high-level concepts into impactful strategy? We are seeking high-performing EL1 Assistant Directors of Strategic Policy to drive crucial reform projects that directly benefit the Australian community. Working within a dynamic Federal Government agency, you will collaborate with key stakeholders, lead policy design, and deliver concise briefings directly to senior executives and Ministers.
The Details:
- Start: ASAP
- Role Type: Full-Time Contract through to 31st December 2026 (potential extension)
- Location: Newcastle, Port Macquarie, Taree, Coffs Harbour, Gosford, Tamworth
- Pay Rate: $602.55 per day + super
- Work Rights: Australian Citizenship required
Key Responsibilities:
- Translate complex, high-level thinking into clear strategic products (papers, submissions, reports, briefs, and ministerial correspondence).
- Use hypothesis-led and structured problem-solving methodologies to tackle complex issues at pace.
- Lead policy design, data analysis, and implementation projects across major reform initiatives.
- Build and manage key stakeholder relationships, driving consensus and taking on feedback constructively to achieve unified positions.
- Provide adaptive leadership and direction to team members in a fast-paced, evolving operating environment.
Skills & Experience Required:
- Qualifications: A relevant bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in lieu of formal qualifications.
- Strategic Policy Expertise: Demonstrated track record writing high-quality policy products for senior leaders and government officials.
- Structured Problem-Solving: Ability to work at pace using hypothesis-led methods and data-driven insights.
- Stakeholder Negotiation: Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills with proven success building strong relationships and resolving complex issues.
- Autonomy & Resilience: Proven capacity to work with limited direction while flexibly managing changing priorities.
- Desirable: Experience in disability sector reform, complex procurement , cognisant of political context, or program/project governance methodologies.
