About the Role
We are seeking a hands-on, motivated Nursery Assistant to join a local government urban horticulture and parks team based in Doncaster.
In this role, you will play an integral part in growing and maintaining the region's urban forest by propagating plants and trees destined for local parks, bushlands, and public open spaces. You will work alongside experienced nursery officers and park teams, delivering high-quality plant production, seed propagation, and general nursery maintenance.
Key Responsibilities
Propagation & Production: Execute seed collection, division, and propagation from seed and cuttings to support annual tree and plant stock targets.
Nursery Operations: Assist with daily plant management, stock dispatch, plant orders, glasshouse maintenance, and general nursery groundskeeping.
Irrigation & Pest Control: Assist with the operation and basic maintenance of irrigation and filtration systems; safely apply herbicides and support pest/disease control measures.
Equipment & Site Safety: Maintain nursery tools, machinery, and equipment in clean, secure, and safe working order; conduct hazard inspections and adhere strictly to WHS procedures.
Record Keeping & Communication: Keep accurate records of production timeframes, stock levels, and completed works; communicate effectively with internal team members and the public.
What We Are Looking For
Experience: Demonstrated background working in a production nursery, commercial horticulture, or parks environment.
Horticultural Knowledge: Practical skills in seed propagation, plant identification, soil prep, and general plant husbandry.
Qualifications: Tertiary qualification in Horticulture, Parks & Gardens, Nursery Operations, or equivalent (highly desirable, but hands-on experience is paramount).
Equipment & Chemicals: Competency operating standard horticultural machinery/tools and safe handling/application of herbicides.
Time Management & Teamwork: Proven ability to manage daily tasks within set timeframes, work autonomously, and contribute positively to a team environment.
Communication: Clear oral and written communication skills with a customer-focused approach when liaising with staff or community members.
