ALPA is seeking a Fisheries Program Coordinator to lead our local Mili Fresh Fish initiative in Milingimbi, Arnhem Land, NT. This position coordinates activities that combine vocational training, community engagement, and sea-country fish harvesting to support local food security, nutrition, and cultural traditions.
Working alongside local Yolŋu and community work crews, you will guide boat operations, fishing activities, gear maintenance, and catch distribution to families, Elders, and local wellbeing programs.
Key Responsibilities
- Vessel & Maritime Leadership: Safely operate and maintain program vessels, manage boat launch/retrieval, handle fishing gear, and conduct daily marine safety briefings (Toolbox Talks).
- Community Food Security: Oversee the harvesting, safe handling, and community distribution of fresh catch for the Mili Fresh Fish enterprise.
- Team Development & Capacity Building: Work side-by-side with Yolŋu Supervisors and participants to build sustainable skills in boat handling, fishing techniques, and workplace safety.
- Program Operations: Manage daily site logistics, stock ordering, asset maintenance, and weekly operational reporting.
- Cultural & Community Connection: Build strong, respectful relationships with Traditional Owners, Elders, and community members, integrating local cultural and sea-country protocols into daily activities.
What You will Bring
Mandatory Licences & Qualifications:
- Coxswain Grade 2 Certificate of Competency (or higher) certified for commercial vessel operations.
- Unrestricted Driver’s Licence (Manual) with experience towing and launching boats.
- NT Working with Children Clearance (Ochre Card) or ability to obtain.
- Current First Aid & CPR Certification or ability to obtain.
Skills & Experience:
- Proven experience in small commercial vessel operations, coastal fishing, gear maintenance, and marine safety compliance.
- Strong leadership skills with experience managing, mentoring, and upskilling team members.
- High-level cultural awareness and adaptability to work respectfully on Yolŋu Country.
- Physical fitness to handle outdoors work, lifting up to 20kg, and navigating remote marine environments in tropical conditions.
