About the Role
Are you an experienced Fire Protection Engineer ready to take a leading role on major building services projects? We are seeking a highly capable Senior Fire Protection Design Engineer (4–7 years’ experience) to join our Melbourne consultancy.
In this role, you will lead the design and delivery of wet and dry fire protection systems across complex commercial, residential, healthcare, and industrial developments. You will play a key role in client liaison, technical mentorship of junior engineers, and cross-disciplinary coordination, driving safe, innovative, and code-compliant design solutions.
Key Responsibilities
Lead the detailed design and documentation of fire protection systems, including automatic fire sprinklers, hydrants, hose reels, fire detection and alarm systems, EWIS, and gas suppression systems.
Author and review comprehensive technical specifications, fire protection strategies, and design reports.
Execute advanced hydraulic calculations (e.g., HYENA or similar) for fire sprinkler and hydrant systems, as well as pump set selection and tank sizing.
Oversee and produce 3D BIM models and 2D documentation in Revit Fire Protection, driving BIM coordination and clash detection with other building services.
Act as the primary point of contact for clients, architects, fire authorities (e.g., FRV / CFA), relevant building surveyors (RBS), and contractors.
Mentor and guide graduate and intermediate engineers, reviewing their technical output and fostering their professional development.
Ensure all designs strictly comply with the National Construction Code (NCC / BCA) and relevant Australian Standards (AS 2118, AS 1670, AS 2419, AS 1851, etc.).
What We Are Looking For
Experience: 4–7 years of professional fire protection engineering design experience within an Australian building services consultancy.
Technical Software Skills: Advanced proficiency in Revit is required. Hands-on experience with hydraulic calculation software (e.g., HYENA, SprinkCAD) and AutoCAD is essential.
Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Fire, or Risk Engineering, or an equivalent qualification recognized by Engineers Australia. Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE Act Victoria) or progress toward CPEng/NER is highly regarded.
Technical Expertise: In-depth technical knowledge of fire safety systems, water supply infrastructure, fire pumping systems, and Australian fire safety legislation.
Leadership & Drive: Strong ownership of project outcomes, a proactive approach to problem-solving, and a genuine passion for advancing your career within fire protection and building services.
Communication: Exceptional client-facing, written, and verbal communication skills, with proven ability to negotiate and resolve design challenges with regulatory authorities.
