Reporting to the Health & Safety Manager and leading a small team of Safety Advisors and Training Specialists, the Health & Safety Superintendent is responsible for supporting the implementation and continuous improvement of the Health and Safety framework for our clients major mining project during construction, commissioning and the transition into operations. This includes supporting WHS legislation compliance and mining project requirements while embedding and promoting a strong and proactive safety culture across the client, EPCM and contractor teams.
Key Accountabilities
- Applying and promoting policies & procedures and ensuring compliance across the site
- Participation in the design, implementation and maintenance of the Integrated Management System
- Provide leadership, guidance and support to drive safety and environmental performance culture
- Coach, mentor and support leaders and all staff in key health and safety matters
- Support benchmarking studies and review of H&S programs and other projects to promote continuous improvement and best practice
- Support and promote the Health and Safety expectations and performance standards
- Promote and support a unified approach across client team, EPCM and all site contractors
- Support and monitor statutory compliance
- Engage with government regulators
- Assist with statutory notifications, serious incident reporting and regulator inspections
- Support the implementation and maintenance of the project specific Safety Management System
- Support safety governance for all EPCM, contractors and other construction teams
- Review safety management plans and high-risk work methodologies
- Facilitate the identification and development of safety related projects risks including risk identification, critical control development, deployment and delivery
- Support investigations using ICAM or equivalent methodology
- Support effective root cause analysis, corrective actions and organisational learning
- Support the implementation and maintenance of the site emergency response and crisis management framework, including fire, medical, rescue and environmental incidents
- Coordinate emergency preparedness drills and multi-agency exercises.
Person profile
- Demonstrated experience supporting Health and Safety management on large mining construction projects, and working within complex multi-contractor environments
- Experience implementing and maintaining project scale Safety Management Systems
- Degree in Health and Safety or equivalent with a thorough understanding of management techniques
- Thorough understanding of the WHS legislation in Australia, in particular SA mining approvals, legislation and processes
- Strong stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to build effective working relationships across operational teams, contractors and regulators
- Ability to communicate and influence a range of employees at different levels
- Excellent organisational skills with the ability to prioritise workloads, meet tight timeframes, and undertake tasks with diligence and attention to detail
- Proven leadership, people management and communication skills with the ability to provide a safe, supportive and positive workplace
- Excellent written and verbal communication skillsKnowledge of investigation techniques such as ICAM
- Significant experience (+10 years) in mining (or similar) industry
- ISO 45001 Lead Auditor experience is highly desirable
- Excellent MS Word, PowerPoint & Excel spreadsheet skills
- Current C Class driver’s license
This contract role is based on the Yorke Peninsula and is offered on a 2/1 DIDO roster with housing and food allowance provided. Preference will be given to applicants with similar large scale mine construction experience. Only shortlisted applicants will be contacted.
