About the Role We are seeking a highly visible Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) Officer for a 6-month contract. Spending approximately 90% of your time directly on site, this position is designed for an approachable safety practitioner who prefers driving frontline engagement over sitting behind a desk.
In this role, you will act as a key safety advisor across active operational environments, working closely with site supervisors, project teams, and trade crews. You will be instrumental in bridging corporate safety expectations with day-to-day site execution, ensuring that work health, safety, environmental, and quality (QSE) standards are met practically and efficiently.
Key Responsibilities
Site Presence & Stakeholder Engagement: Maintain a strong, visible presence across site operations. Build constructive relationships with workforce personnel and subcontractors to foster open communication, mentorship, and positive safety behaviors.
High-Risk Work & Critical Controls: Monitor daily high-risk activities with a strong focus on working at heights, scaffold structures, mast climbers, swing stages, and temporary works. Implement and execute project QSE strategies, critical control management, and risk mitigation frameworks on the ground.
Compliance & Continuous Improvement: Audit site activities against WHS legislation, project specifications, and approved SWMS. Drive continuous improvement initiatives, identify operational hazards early, and apply sound technical knowledge and innovative problem-solving to resolve complex site challenges.
Incidents & Investigations: Lead thorough internal incident and near-miss investigations using recognized methodologies (e.g., ICAM). Analyze root causes, deliver actionable recommendations, and translate lessons learned into practical site improvements to prevent recurrence.
QSE Governance & Reporting: Maintain accurate QSE administrative records, digital registers, and compliance documentation. Compile clear OHS performance reports for project management, identifying trends and recommending site-level actions for ongoing safety enhancement.
Training & Mentorship: Deliver engaging site inductions, pre-start meetings, and targeted toolbox safety briefings. Provide ongoing WHS advice and coaching to frontline supervisors and contractor leads to strengthen safety capability across all work fronts.
Desirable Experience & Qualifications
Relevant qualifications in Work Health and Safety (Certificate IV or higher).
Proven track record as a field-focused HSE Officer, Advisor, or Coordinator.
Demonstrated experience in high-risk environments, including exposure to building maintenance, cladding systems, civil works, or commercial construction.
Practical experience overseeing high-risk work at heights involving scaffold structures, mast climbers, and swing stage setups.
Substantial experience managing and engaging with multiple trade subcontractors simultaneously.
Skilled in leading ICAM or root-cause incident investigations.
Current valid Driver’s Licence (essential for site travel).
