About the Role
We are seeking an experienced EL1 Assistant Director – Cultural Safety Learning to lead the development, implementation and continuous improvement of cultural safety learning and development initiatives.
In this strategic yet hands-on role, you will focus on building workforce capability to improve access to services for First Nations peoples and communities. You will lead the design of workplace capability initiatives, provide high-level policy and strategic advice to senior executives and drive co-design and stakeholder engagement across First Nations peoples, communities and organisations. Key Responsibilities
... Program Design & Implementation: Lead the design, development, and implementation of the Cultural Safety Learning Program and capability development initiatives that advance strategic objectives.
Executive Advice & Briefing: Provide high-level cultural safety learning, policy, and strategic advice to senior executives, preparing complex, accurate and evidence-based documentation including Ministerial briefs, submissions and committee papers.
Stakeholder Engagement & Co-Design: Oversee engagement processes to ensure effective co-design, consultation and collaboration across internal business areas, First Nations communities and key partners.
Strategic Representation: Represent the federal government agency in high-level internal and external forums, working groups and committees to advocate for embedding cultural safety in policy and training outcomes.
Monitoring, Evaluation & Risk: Oversee monitoring, evaluation and reporting activities to track deliverables, performance measures and strategic risks.
Leadership & Change Advocacy: Provide strategic guidance and mentorship to team members, fostering a safe workplace culture while advocating for responsive, strengths-based approaches to training systems.
Key Skills & Experience Required
First Nations Engagement & Partnership: Demonstrated experience building trusted, respectful relationships and working in genuine co-design partnerships with First Nations peoples, communities and organisations.
Learning & Capability Development: Expertise in instructional design, adult learning and leading complex workplace capability initiatives integrated with risk and governance principles.
Cultural Safety Knowledge: Deep understanding of First Nations cultures, histories and perspectives, with proven capability to embed these into capability development, policy and program design.
Analytical & Strategic Thinking: Strong ability to analyse diverse data sources, assess policy impacts and deliver evidence-based recommendations in complex environments.
Leadership & People Management: Demonstrated background leading high-performing teams, managing resources, setting priorities and mentoring staff.
Communication & Representation: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including high-level briefing experience and representation in external forums.
Eligibility Requirements
Australian Citizenship is mandatory.
Candidates must be willing and eligible to undergo relevant background and suitability checks.
Desirable: Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40122 or equivalent) and relevant tertiary qualifications. Experience working with Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations or relevant government agencies is highly regarded.
