job description

Nazarbayev Intellectual Schools (NIS) in Kazakstan are a network of 20 state-funded grammar schools which aim to educate the future intellectual elite of this prosperous and highly literate country. Students at NIS are educated in a uniquely tri-lingual environment in Kazakh, Russian and English, and the schools are intended to change the way education is delivered to gifted and talented children.

Class sizes are small, between 11 and 22 pupils, and the purpose built schools are new and equipped with student laptops, electronic smart-boards and state of the art facilities. The government of Kazakhstan is investing heavily across many sectors of society, including education, and particularly in these new grammar schools. This is your opportunity to be a part of the future of this vibrant, up and coming country as it transforms itself.

Teachers for this project must be up-to-date on modern, interactive teaching methods. Your duties will include providing local teachers informal mentoring on best practice in your subject specialisation, organising courses to prepare students for university entrance tests, organising courses on critical thinking, organising social and cultural events for the students, being active in your professional association and contributing to curriculum development. It's a big job with similarly big rewards.

Requirements:

NIS is currently seeking teachers of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Economics and ICT/Computer Science, who must have:

  • 3 years of relevant and consistent experience, teaching at secondary level in a regular classroom environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree and teacher training such as a PGCE, PGDE or Bachelors of Education or equivalent.
  • Candidates with Masters Degrees or PhDs are particularly welcomed and experience/training to teach children for whom English is not the first language is desired.
  • Native English speaker with high levels of English proficiency, both written and oral
  • There is an age limit of 58 for a visa in Kazakhstan, candidates will be required to pass a medical screening if successful at interview
  • Teachers considering this project need to be professionally and personally self-sufficient; they are looking for pioneers.

Package: Salary is competitive at A$5000 per month - with cost of living in Kazakhstan about one-third of that in Australia, the savings potential is immense. There is an additional allowance of $1300 for teachers working in a regional school outside of Astana and Almaty. You will receive a settling-in allowance and accommodation is provided, along with medical insurance.
