The National Director is a full-time paid position that provides leadership to Disaster Relief Australia’s six existing Disaster Relief Teams (DRTs) reporting directly to the COO. This role enables effective volunteer management across the organisation to ensure the wellbeing of people while also achieving overall operational readiness requirements to assist communities in need. The successful candidate will be required to build new Disaster Relief Teams across Australia and support the overall growth and expansion of the organisation.

Role & Responsibilities

  • Lead the launch, development and ongoing growth of existing and new DRTs
  • Support the activity of DRT Managers, providing strategic direction and assistance as required
  • Chair DRT Manager meetings on a regular basis
  • Provide direction and support to the National Training Coordinator to ensure the training aligns with DRA’s strategic objectives and requirements
  • Provide direction and support to the National Membership Experience Manager, guiding the engagement, recruitment and retention of the DRA membership base
  • Ensure that existing DRT’s are prepared to support disaster relief field operations
  • Managing federal funding regimes, ensuring allocated budgets are expended and deadlines met
  • Undertake timely and accurate reporting across areas of responsibility
  • Oversee the management of any specialist projects as identified by the Executive
  • National travel required

Skills & Experience

  • Extensive project management skills
  • Previous leadership positions in Defence, Emergency Services or the Civil sector
  • Coordination of staff and resources
  • Management and coordination of volunteers
  • Relationship management skills, i.e. external clients and stakeholders
  • Excellent financial management and budgeting skills
  • Demonstrated accountability and ownership of decisions
  • A high degree of IT ability including Microsoft Office and Google Docs experience
  • An ability to operate with a high degree of integrity and transparency in potentially sensitive environments
  • Collaborate with ease alongside and in coordination with others including volunteer leaders to drive results

Benefits

  • Work for a leading Not-For-Profit organisation helping communities in need
  • Competitive salary package
  • Positive and supportive work culture
  • Strong management support from the Executive Team and the National Leadership Team
  • Genuine career development and growth opportunities

This is an exciting opportunity to undertake a pivotal senior leadership position, with the potential to have a significant impact on the operational effectiveness of Disaster Relief Australia, and on the wellbeing of the membership base.

The right candidate will find Disaster Relief Australia a dynamic and responsive organisation willing to invest in its leaders and trust their judgement.
