Our client, a NSW Government Department require the skills of a Media extraordinaire for the period of 4-5 months. Based in Wollongong the Coordinator Media and Public Relations is responsible for coordinating public relations, engaging with key internal and external media stakeholders, and developing and implementing communication policy and procedures to contribute to the enhancement of the organisation’s brand and reputation. The role also ensures the preparedness of Public Information resources for emergency response including assisting in the development and utilisation of multiple communication channels.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of policy and procedures in relation to internal and external communication and public information; and develop media strategies and co-ordinate the implementation of timely and accurate information that supports the brand identity, organisational profiling and marketing
  • Ensure the preparedness of Public Information resources for emergency response including assisting in the development and utilisation of multiple communication channels
  • Proactively develop and maintain consultative relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including media, and liaise on operational and non-operational issues, corporate communications, public awareness campaigns and educational opportunities
  • Develop media briefs and speaking notes for key personnel within the organisation to ensure consistency of message and alignment with organisational goals, values, vision and mission
  • Support the Office of the Commissioner and coordinate ministerial information, media interviews and draft media releases/statements in consultation with subject matter experts to ensure the reputation of the organisation is maintained
  • Manage the organisation's reputation through understanding evolving issues, reviewing and managing reputational risks, and providing advice to senior managers on media engagement
  • Contribute to the operational readiness including the management of the media studio and the coordination of media contractor relationships
  • Develop content and work with the Senior Social Marketing Officer to implement the media and public relations training program aimed at increasing capability across the state and raising awareness of the community brand

Role Dimensions

Decision making

  • The Coordinator Media & Public Relations will determine day-to-day priorities and make recommendations to senior staff regarding updates to work tasks and projects. The role will refer decisions the role supervisor such as any decision that will substantially alter the outcomes or timeframe of a project, controversial or contentious media issues, major policy issues or conflicts arising in the course of project and other duties and matters requiring a higher delegated authority such as approval for expenditure and/or travel.

Key Requirements:

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications or equivalent experience in media, public relations, journalism or marketing
  • Extensive skills and experience in public relations, marketing practices and creative writing, and with electronic and print median
  • Thorough knowledge of AIIMS principles and processes, and/or willingness to obtain competence within 12 months
