Randstad are proud to partner with the Queensland State Government and are currently recruiting for Laboratory Technician roles.

The department currently has a vacancy for a Laboratory Technician in their Brisbane south location. The initial contract duration is until 30th June 2021 with the possibility to extend.

The purpose of this role is to support the laboratory and research functions of the specific program by conducting sample diagnostics, preparing samples for analysis, entering data and maintaining live insect cultures, as well as supporting other team members with general laboratory-based tasks.

Key Duties:

  • Work cooperatively in a multidisciplinary team of scientists, technical and support staff undertaking field experiments and laboratory research into innovative methods for the detection, identification and eradication of the red imported fire ant.
  • As part of a team of technical officers, provide laboratory-based technical support to ensure that scientific services are delivered in an effective and efficient manner.
  • Laboratory tasks in this role will be assigned according to workflow priorities, but are expected to include the following:
    • identifying suspect ants from samples or images;
    • preparing ant samples for microscopic inspection and/or genetic analysis;
    • entering diagnostic or other data into program information systems;
    • maintaining colonies of invasive ant species;
    • producing odour impregnated materials for the training of specialist odour detection dogs;
  • preparing sample collection jars for field staff use;
  • preparing displays of live insect material for community engagement activities;
  • setting up and monitoring laboratory-based experiments;

The successful Candidate will:

  • Associate Diploma in Biological Science from a recognised tertiary institution, or equivalent academic qualifications, or experience that demonstrates equivalent competencies.
  • Experience in identifying biological specimens via morphological and/or molecular methods

It is expected that the successful candidate will possess strong oral/written communication, presentation and interpersonal skills. They will display initiative, attention to detail, and have the ability to work autonomously and unsupervised whilst contributing to the wider team's objectives of ensuring service delivery exceeds expectations.
