job description

Job purpose:

Responsible for undertaking analysis, design and proposing ‘fit for purpose’ IT and business solutions to meet the infrastructure requirements of a large projects, small programs of work or segments of large, complex programs of work.

Solution design

  • Source and manage solution design outcomes, develop design documentation and obtain approval from key stakeholders for large projects, small programs of work or segments of large, complex programs of work to ensure that solutions are 'fit for purpose', take into account the requirements of stakeholders and IT infrastructure strategy and roadmap
  • Manage the resolution of design decisions and issues through the solution design and delivery phases for medium risk and smaller programs of work or segments of large, complex programs of work to ensure timely identification and resolution
  • Apply expertise knowledge of systems to inform Architecture and Solutions Design on optimal designs and appropriate compromises to ensure high quality solutions are delivered to the business


  • Collaborate with the Architect in the development, maintenance and communication of high level plans for investing in the IT environment / infrastructure to provide subject matter expertise for the technology planning process

Best practice and compliance:

Track solutions through all phases and escalate to the Principal Solution Designer to maintain effective governance, reporting and control

Service delivery:

  • Provide thought leadership to the organisation within respective speciality area and remain up to date with content knowledge to ensure high quality service is delivered to the business

Partner and vendor management:

  • Liaise with project team members and senior stakeholders (Business, Architecture, Security and Operations) to ensure strong relationships are maintained, and business, technology requirements and solutions are understood

Financial and workforce management:

  • Deliver cost estimates for the design and develop phase in partnership with the architect, business analysts, project management, subject matter experts and solution providers. for smaller programs of work or segments of large, complex programs of work and review other projects to provide accurate and timely cost estimate

Delivery of IT Infrastructure Solution Design services provided by Technology, for all WBC Group business units, to agreed service levels.

Architecture – Intermediate

Building the framework for IT development and maintenance. Work with Architecture to ensure successful implementation of strategy.

Design - Advanced

Design efficient, robust solutions to ensure systems and enhancements support business needs.


  • Eight +years in IT Industry/Financial services, with a major component of this in the area of Infrastructure design and delivery.
  • Four + years experience in infrastructure systems specification and design and delivering major solutions (application systems & supporting infastructure) into production
  • It is highly desirable to have experience with, or an understanding of, the following technologies
    • Intel based hardware
    • RISC based hardware
    • Windows Operating System
    • UNIX Operating System
    • Virtualisation platforms
    • Various network and security devices (firewalls, switches, routers etc.)
    • Load balancing and clustering technologies for high availability
    • SAN infrastructure
    • Cloud and Mobility
    • RDBMS (Oracle and SQL Server)


  • Tertiary qualifications in Information Technology or a related discipline or demonstrated equivalent work experience with > 8 years in IT industry/financial services experience or consulting
  • Industry certifications relevant to speciality area is desirable
  • Post graduate qualifications are an advantage
