Working closely with our client within the Victorian State Government we are seeking professional and proactive Food Scientist/Technologist to join this team; who share the responsibility for developing and administering food regulation with the Commonwealth and Victorian local governments to promote consistent regulatory requirements in a widely dispersed and varied food industry.

We are currently seeking to fill two positions:

  • 1 x Full time position for 4 months with potential for extension
  • 1 X Part time (2.5 days a week for 3 months with potential for extension

Ideally we are seeking candidates that have a strong interest in Food safety and/or Environmental Health and candidates who hold a Bachelor of Health Sciences (Public and Environmental Health), or equivalent, will be looked upon favourably.

Reporting to the Manager the successful candidate will become an integral member of this dynamic and supportive team whilst managing a variety of interesting tasks

The role wilk see you complete such tasks as:

  • Lead the food safety response during food related, multi-jurisdictional outbreaks of food borne illness;
  • Undertake risk assessments to determine whether food items must be removed from sale;
  • Lead/action activities on national food safety incidents through the bi-national Food Safety Network and/or bi-national Food Incident Response Working Group
  • Researching and drafting of food safety information and guidance materials for local government environmental health officers on 'hot topic' issues;
  • Responding to complaints and enquiries received though the Unit's Food Safety Hotline, Food Safety Inbox and from other sources;
  • Supporting the Manager, Regulatory Policy on a range of food allergen related projects and activities;
  • Assisting in the implementation of the Victorian kilojoule labelling scheme; and
  • Leading the response to the Food Standards Australia New Zealand Proposal on Plain English Allergen Labelling.
  • Explore and lead opportunities for collaboration with both internal and external stakeholders with respect to food allergens, and link/embed into projects occurring within the FSU.
  • Review and ensure currency of food allergen and intolerance information; and explore opportunities for new information
  • Review and update all RIM standard operating procedures and associated standard documents and templates.
  • Assist in response to proposal on Plain English Allergen Labelling
  • Draft various food safety information and guidance for local council environmental health officers

The ideal candidates will have:

  • Previous experience working within a similar role
  • Excellent verbal and written skills with the ability to understand and articulate legislation and requirements
  • Exposure to assisting in policy and process development and improvement
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to develop strong working relationships
  • Ability to self manages and works autonomously whilst contributing to a larger working group
  • Knowledge of the Food Safety Act and Food Allergens is highly advantageous.
  • Candidates who hold qualification across Bachelor of Health Sciences (Public and Environmental Health), or equivalent, will be looked upon favourably.

All successful candidates will need to undergo and pass a National Police Check

Candidates that have resided outside if Australia for more than 12 months within the last 10 years will need to provide an international security check.
