The project will transition hundreds of terabytes of data and resource industry exploration and production reports (>100,000) from 7 systems, off-line physical media and hardcopy into a single integrated cloud based repository (data lake) where is can be filtered, sorted and downloaded by GSQ, resource industry and other stakeholders. It is expected 5 systems will be decommissioned as part of the project. The project has an approved business case and is commencing procurement of a technology solution and implementation preparation.

Key deliverables for each of the 12 main data types includes

  • Data asset inventory populated with attributes such as custodianship roles, data location, metrics – volumes, number of files, security and quality rating, readiness for upload.
  • Data catalogue for each data type which includes
    • A data model indicating the relationships between data objects within a data type. For example a seismic survey may have a survey file, many raw and processed SEG files in 2D or 3D and interpretation reports
    • Data profile containing key meta-data to support human and machine searching
    • Data vocabularies, which define the meaning and context of data objects for searching and in a data, graph.
  • Mapping legacy system database schemas to the new data lake catalogue schema
  • Defining Extract/transform/load (ETL) and/or Extract/load/transform (ELT) plans and patterns to bulk (up to 100,000 records) upload data to the data lake
  • Writing, testing and running ETL and ELT scripts to ingest data into the data lake

  • Graph database (Graph DB)


  • Proven success leading teams of data owners and managers to define data standards and high level data models in a specialised, highly technical business discipline.
  • Extensive experience leading the planning, structuring, organising, migrating and integration of large, complex datasets from multiple systems into a single repository.
  • Extensive hands-on experience performing a diverse range of data management activities including data analysis, cataloguing, developing and applying data standards, assessing data quality, defining data quality rules, taxonomies and vocabularies as well as migrating data into a centralised repository.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, building and maintaining relationships with a range of stakeholders in technical/scientific, administrative, operational and management roles.
