Primary Purpose of Position
The APS5 Protective Security Advisor is accountable, under limited direction, for the administration and support of security functions and operations. This role involves managing moderately complex to complex issues, often related to sensitive topics.
Working in accordance with established policies and procedures, the Protective Security Advisor will enhance organisational effectiveness and efficiency by supporting all aspects of protective security management, including contract preparation, stakeholder engagement, and invoice processing. Additionally, the Advisor will serve as a Designated Security Officer. Knowledge of the Australian Government security framework, such as the Protective Security Policy Framework, is highly desirable.
Relevant Duties
Leadership and Accountability
- Manage day-to-day protective security services, including:
- Preparing process improvement plans and scopes of work.
- Liaising with stakeholders to negotiate security improvements.
- Providing management oversight of the APS4 Personnel Administration Officer.
- Offer high-level advice to business leaders and employees on protective security matters, including pre-employment screening, security clearance, incident management, and overseas travel advice.
- Provide support to operational managers in developing and maintaining risk management strategies, identifying variances, and coordinating security risk mitigation efforts.

Management Diversity and Span
- Supervise support staff and contractors to ensure high-quality service delivery.
- Manage operational aspects of guarding services, access systems, and security controls.
- Coordinate monitoring and reporting on security systems to identify risks.
Job Context and Environment
- Collaborate with teams and clients to efficiently administer daily security operations, troubleshooting issues as they arise.
- Maintain an understanding of relevant legislation and policy frameworks.
- Promote a security culture that values the protection of government information and assets.
- Monitor project and operational outcomes, adjusting priorities as necessary.
- Support management in identifying security needs, preparing contracts, processing invoices, and advising on action options.
Independence and Decision-Making
- Operate independently, guided by established security priorities and frameworks, to deliver quality outcomes.
- Assist in developing comprehensive security policies, plans, and procedures.
Stakeholder Management
- Manage relationships with internal and external stakeholders to achieve goals, anticipating their needs and expectations.
- Build and maintain strong relationships to keep the organisation informed and provide escalation points when needed.
Essential Requirements
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Negative Vetting 1 security clearance, with potential for a higher clearance as required.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a national police check.
- Australian Citizenship is a condition of eligibility.
