Randstad is currently seek an APS5 Technical Policy officer for a Federal Government Department located in the City. This temporary contract is 6 - 12 months to commence ASAP.

The team

The suitable candidate will be working in the Export Standards Branch. This branch works with trading partners to maintain, improve and establish new market access for meat, fish, dairy, eggs, animal by-products and non-prescribed goods by negotiating agreed conditions of trade. Duties of the branch include facilitating the clearance of detained consignments, hosting foreign government delegations conducting in-country audits and reviews, development of Australian positions on international standard setting for trade in food, update of content for the Manual of Importing Country Requirements (MICoR) website, and provision of chemical, residue and microbiological policy oversight including export meat performance monitoring. The Australian Codex Alimentarius Contact Point and the SAFEMEAT Secretariat are located in this branch. The Food and Animal By-Products Section provides technical input into maintaining existing, or negotiating new or improved market access for Australia’s meat and animal product exports. This section works closely with department operational export programs, Trade and Market Access Division, overseas posts and relevant industry bodies.

The role

Duties include:

  • Working on topical issues crucial for the future of the exports of meat and other animal products and by-products. This includes being involved in longer term projects, such as the communications plan for the department’s Next Export Documentation System (NEXDOC) and review of disease preparedness activities from an export perspective.
  • Liaising, negotiating and effectively communicating with Australian and overseas government agencies, industry bodies, and other internal and external stakeholders in support of technical market access.
  • Undertaking research, developing technical submissions and briefing in support of technical market access negotiations for animal products and by-products.
  • Navigating and updating the Manual of Importing Requirements database.

  • Flexible, resilient and work well under pressure, exercising sound judgement in managing competing priorities and timeframes
  • Strong communication skills, in writing and in person
  • Desirable qualifications and/or experience would include bachelor level degree in science, veterinary science, agricultural science, food science, microbiology, public health or international/trade law. Experience with the use of Sharepoint or the other similar web-based databases is highly favourable.
