“Mars Food Australia used Leanne Burgess of Randstad to recruit for our Corporate Affairs manager in 2009. The process was a particularly difficult one as we were looking for a part-time associate at a reasonably junior level to start up the Corporate Affairs function in our business. We needed someone who had the required skills and experience but perhaps more importantly, the right cultural fit and leadership potential. Brief – Our challenge was to source and experience and professional senior Business Development Manager, to drive growth among our existing tier one clients and secure new business with a select group of target accounts.
Challenges – the key challenge was to source a candidate that had the right mix of technical knowledge of the printing and manufacturing process involved to develop premium quality packaging and point of sales systems. The candidate also needed to demonstrate a proven sales track record, winning new business and an intimate knowledge of our target clients.
First of all we had tried to source candidates ourselves before being referred to contact Peter Newell at Randstad through our central HR function. The reason I was put in contact with Randstad was that we had just established a new national preferred supplier agreement.
Process – Initially Peter and his colleague Trent Short came out to meet me and take a detailed job brief. They especially took the time to understand our business, the requirements and expectations of the role and the key experience we needed. I also showed Peter and Trent around our manufacturing facility to give them some extra knowledge of our operation.
From there, Peter led the initial screening and candidate sourcing process, using their existing database and placing several targeting job advertisements on the internet. This process took around 2 weeks in total.
At an agreed time, Peter presented me with a shortlist of qualified candidates who had been met by him and briefed on the role. Peter took the time explain the key reasons of why he was presenting each candidate and their experience relevant to our job description. He also gave us clear information about the salary expectations of each candidate and their motivations for the opportunity and Visy Glama.
Once I had agreed to meet the candidates Peter ran the scheduling of interviews between my self and the candidates during the first, second and third rounds. We began with a shortlist of 5 and eventually culled that down to 1 final preferred candidate. After each round of interviews, Peter consistently contacted me for feedback on how the meetings went and also gave me feedback from the candidates on their thoughts and level of interest in the opportunity. Once we had decided on our preferred candidate, Peter conducted several reference checks and delivered a comprehensive report of each conversation. He also was involved in the final salary negotiation process and setting the start date that suited our business and the candidate.
The final outcome was that after trying more many months looking ourselves, Peter and the team at Randstad were able to deliver a quality candidate in a time frame which suited our needs and he is now a very successful member of our team.
Communication – Most importantly, Peter was constantly communicating with me on how the assignment was going. At each stage in the process, right from the initial briefing, Peter kept up to date on how many candidates had applied, the quality of applicants, their interest in the role and giving direction for the scheduling interviews. Peter was always very enthusiastic about promoting Visy Glama to his candidate pool acting as our advocate to the market. Also, each candidate that came to meet me was always well prepared and given a clear understanding of our expectations.
Ongoing Relationship – Since this first assignment, I have engaged Peter again to work on another BDM role, which he also successfully filled. Out side of this, Peter has spoken to me on many occasions about candidates he is representing at different experience levels, who would potentially be of interest to us in the future.
Peter has also invited me and several of my staff to external industry networking events. As well as discussing relevant market intel and being a source of information to me about how the general employment market.
Looking forward, I am confident Peter and the Randstad team have an in depth knowledge of my business and the calibre of candidates I look for. Therefore I will be happy to continue to engage Randstad on future recruitment assignments.
